Medicare and Marketing

Agents assisting you with your Medicare options ARE NOT allowed to…..

  • Ask for information, such as your bank account, over the phone unless it’s needed as part of an enrollment.
  • Require you to provide them your Medicare Number or Social Security Number for a quote. Plans don’t need those numbers to give you a quote. You may need to give them date of birth and zip code for an accurate quote.
  • Come to your home uninvited to sell or endorse or promote anything.
  • Call you unless you’re already a member of the plan or you’ve given them permission to contact you. If you’re a member, the agent who helped you join may call you.
  • Offer you cash or a gift with a value more than $15 to join their plan.
  • Make an appointment to tell you about their plan unless you agree.
  • Market their plans or enroll you during an educational event. Educational events would be something like a health fair or conference.
  • Advertise to you using confusing words or images, or misleading Medicare logos.
  • Charge you a fee to enroll you into a plan.
  • Communicate incorrect information about plans or use inappropriate statements like their plan is “the best” or “highest ranked.”
  • Tell you about other plan options you haven’t agreed to discuss, unless you ask about them.
  • Pressure you to join a plan by saying things like “you won’t have coverage next year.”
  • Ask you to sign the enrollment form before you’re ready to join.

When making decisions about your coverage………

Don’t be afraid to ask questions or ask for clarification.

This is your coverage and you have every right to ask questions.

Don’t allow someone to pressure you or make you feel you have to sign up for coverage if you are unsure.
